LessonFive shapes, a whole family

박쌤 Consonants draw your mouth. There are 5 basic shapes.

박쌤 ㄱ: the back of your tongue. ㄴ: the tip of your tongue. ㅁ: your lips. ㅅ: a tooth. ㅇ: your throat.

박쌤 Add a stroke and you get a stronger sound: ㄴ → ㄷ, ㅁ → ㅂ, ㅅ → ㅈ, ㅇ → ㅎ.

박쌤 One more thing. ㄱ ㄷ ㅂ ㅈ are soft. At the start of a word, they're close to k, t, p, ch. Between two vowels, they become g, d, b, j.

박쌤 That's why 고기 sounds like “ko-gi”. Same letter, two sounds. Your ears will get used to it.

Lettersㄱ · ㄴ · ㄷ · ㄹ

Four new letters, four real words!

Word ㄱ g/k · ㄴ n · ㄷ d/t · ㄹ r/l — ㄹ is special: between two vowels, it's a very light tap of the tongue, like the “tt” in American “butter”.

Examples 고기 gogi meat · 나이 (nai) — age · 다리 (dari) — leg, bridge · 라디오 (radio) — radio

Lettersㅁ · ㅂ · ㅅ · ㅈ · ㅎ

Five more letters. Now you can read a lot!

Word ㅁ m · ㅂ b/p · ㅅ s · ㅈ j · ㅎ h — Before 이, ㅅ sounds “sh”: 시 = shi.

Examples 모자 moja hat · 바다 (bada) — sea · 나비 (nabi) — butterfly · 지도 (jido) — map · 하마 (hama) — hippo
