LessonThe silent circle

박쌤 Remember: a block always starts with a consonant. But what if the syllable starts with a vowel sound?

박쌤 Korean uses a placeholder: the circle ㅇ. At the start of a block, it makes no sound.

박쌤 ㅇ + ㅏ = 아: just “a”. ㅇ + ㅗ = 오: just “o”.

박쌤 So when you see a circle at the start of a block, skip it and read the vowel.

박쌤 At the bottom of a block, the circle does make a sound, “ng”. But that's for later!

Letters아 · 어 · 오

Your first three vowels!

Word 아 a · 어 eo · 오 o — 아: open your mouth wide. 어: open, lips relaxed, like “uh”. 오: round your lips.

Examples 아! a! Ah! · 어? (eo?) — Huh? · 오 (o) — five

Letters우 · 으 · 이

Three more. Now you can read real words!

Word 우 u · 으 eu · 이 i — 우: push your lips forward, like a kiss. 으: pull your lips back, like a smile. 이: like “ee”.

Examples 이 i two, tooth · 아이 (ai) — child · 오이 (oi) — cucumber
