LessonThe bottom letter
박쌤 Remember the third letter at the bottom of a block? It's called 받침, batchim: “the support”.
박쌤 한 = ㅎ + ㅏ + ㄴ. The ㄴ at the bottom is the batchim.
박쌤 Many letters can go at the bottom, but they make only 7 sounds: k, n, t, l, m, p, ng.
박쌤 ㄱ ㅋ ㄲ → k. ㅂ ㅍ → p. And ㄷ ㅅ ㅈ ㅊ ㅌ ㅎ ㅆ → all t!
박쌤 At the bottom, ㅇ finally speaks: “ng”, like in “song”.
Examples 한국 hanguk Korea · 산 (san) — mountain · 옷 (ot) — clothes · 물 (mul) — water · 김치 (gimchi) — kimchi · 밥 (bap) — rice · 빵 (ppang) — bread · 꽃 (kkot) — flower
LessonLinking: 한국어 sounds like 한구거
박쌤 Here's why Korean sometimes sounds so fast.
박쌤 When a block ends with a batchim and the next block starts with the silent ㅇ, the batchim slides into the next block.
박쌤 한국어 →. 음악 (music) →. 옷이 →.
박쌤 맛있어요 (delicious) →. You'll say it a lot!
박쌤 And remember 하은이에요? It sounds like. Now you know why!
